new slow jets for 1980 carbs

Postby PsjrS » Sat Sep 12, 2015 2:02 pm

I'm having trouble with rich mixtures in three of my crabs. I've set the screws at one and a half turns. The carbs have been rebuilt short of replacing the slow jets. I suspect that the originals have been molested by previous rebuilders. Is there a way to install the threaded variety in 1980 carbs? I rebuilt a set of 1983 carbs for my 1977gl1000 and it has ran great for three years now. This 1100 has been frustrating me for quite a while now.

They can be pulled out..with a sheet metal screw..screw in lightly and pull/wiggle gently..

Once the old ones are removed, can the 1980 carbs be drilled and tapped to accept the 1983 style slow jets, or will the earlier castings not allow this? I already have a complete set of 1983's.
Are 1980 style available anywhere?

No I don't think that is doable..maybe if you fill the tube with solder and then drilled to match the jet and then tapped but not just tap and install. But you can put the 83 carbs on any 1100 they are all the same in function. They are exactly the same except for the screwed in idle jets.

i have been thinking of the same thing. i have an 83 so i have a few "spare" slow jets. i would like to obtain some "pressed" in slow jets and mic them out and see if it would be possible to machine the carb body to accept the screw in type. the main reason for doing this is there are new screw in type slow jets available, i have not come across any new press in type. and in the case you mentioned if the PO has drilled them out over size trying to clean them then they will have to be replace. if it can be done it would save a lot of old carbs.

I have the old jets out, and they are slightly smaller than the 1983 types. I'm going to do some careful measuring on the carb body. There will have to be a series of drills used for both the threads and so the jet goes in just as far as the originals. I believe I once read on this site about someone doing this before. I also remember mention of a source for new press in types, but I've been to many sites looking for information.

i back loaded the slow jet from an 83 with limited dimensions and have included it as an attachment. the thread size is 6x.75mm. (the OD mics out at .228) i don't have a carb body to work with but i hope these dimensions will help you.

Thanks for the info. I got similar results with my calipers. The thread size is especially useful. I wasn't sure of that yet. I intend to practice on some scrap aluminum first. I may not get to this right away, but I will let you know what I come up with. Thanks

I seen about 6 months ago on ebay that I think it was siriusconinc selling the jets which were the press in type, but they were listed for another bike brand and read a post on so cycle site that somebody used them and they were a little longer but worked fine. But I can't find the site either now.

I found there site http://www.siriusconinc.com/pro-detail. ... ct_id=1191

Thanks for the link. The jets they're selling are for a cbx. I decided to get them because they look right, and they were only about 40$ with shipping. I'm going to install them this weekend. I'll report back the results.

I'm happy to report that the new slow jets worked. The old ones had been drilled out to a size that was at least three times that of the new jets. This caused me a great deal of frustration. I now have control of idle mixture with the pilot screws and the bike has become infinitely more ridable. I'm also not using crazy amounts of fuel anymore.

Yes they are. In fact, they even have the same markings as the originals. 35
Thanks again
