hole in bottom of engine gl1100 leaking oil

Postby seagull08 » Sat Sep 12, 2015 8:25 pm

I just joined the forum. Just got a gl1100 about 2 months ago and really enjoying it, but noticed a small hole in the bottom of my engine, just behind where the water hose goes into bottom of engine. Is there supposed to be a screw in this hole or is it an overflow hole for something? It is leaking oil. Need help to what this is, I do not have a manual as of yet to check this myself.

It's the weep hole for the water pump. Here some links to the Honda and Haynes 1100 manuals I uploaded.

Yup, this is the weep, or "telltale" hole that is now alerting you that your water pump bearings and/or seals have failed. Basically, it's time for a new water pump.

Read through: How to remove and replace your water pump for lots of details.

I should have linked to WA's how-to, too. Great write up. Sorry about that, boss.

I wanted to get the Haynes manual but that link is wanting me to get some other stuff that looks like add-ons that I don't want. Is that the case? Also, isn't that weep hole supposed to be there? WA said it indicated a replacement water pump.

He meant a replacement water pump is needed. The weep hole is supposed to be there but dry. "Weeping" oil or coolant indicates that there is a problem with the seals or bearing that needs attention.

Ya, sorry about that host. I uploaded them there a couple of years ago before I started using dropbox. I'd reup all my manuals to a better host but my upload speed here is only 33kbs and it would take days. I think I get one popup from that site but the download process isn't difficult, just click where the red arrows are pointing:

or you can click where it says "view document" to open the .pdf in your browser

Be sure you pay attention to the tutorial on the removal of the casing bolts. Everyone is different, the replacement of the water pump is a PITA. But take your time and since you have the radiator removed, replace the thermostat and gasket. Flush the cooling system with distilled water after the water pump has been replaced. :D :D

And take your time doing a REALLY good job of removing every bit of the old gasket. Have a look at the pictures I took in that guide, it really does need to be that clean and smooth.
