Newbee with a couple questions.

Postby fordnutjm » Tue Jul 13, 2010 7:01 pm

Hello all ! I have just got a 83 Gl1100 that needs a few repairs. Foremost, I have to replace the broken throttle cable. Also, I was told that the signals and fuel gage dont work until after the engine has run for a while. Would the signals be needing a relay? Is that the same thing as a flasher?
What about the fuel gage?
Also need to know the location of the bad parts.
Thanks ahead of time !
Jeff.

The sending unit for the fuel guage is on top of the tank (under the seat). As far as the blinkers go I have no experience with that yet but you are the second person on here that has had that same issue. If you haven't changed all of your fuses yet I would advise you do that, it might take care of both your problems. Fuse box is inside the false tank toward the front.

Is your bike an Interstate or an Aspencade? i.e. does it have the digital dash?

When the fuel gauge stops working, does the temperature gauge quit as well?

It is possible the sending unit is defective. What you can do is to remove the leads from the top of the tank. Put an OHM meter across the terminals and see if you get a reading. Can't remember how many ohms it will be but if you get an open (infinite) then the reostat is open. If you remove the sending unit you'll see a metal cased box about the size of a matchbox that's connected to the sending unit lid with the float arm. Carefully remove the cover and there is a small wiper that runs across a coil of resistive wire. One side of the wire is tied to the body (ground). The wiper will get corroded/rusted and loose contact withe the coil wire. This is what gives you variable resistance and causes the gauge to move from Empty to Full. You can put your ohm meter across the terminals and move the float up and down. When working correctly it will vary. A good cleaning of the wiper and coil and a very slight bend on the tab to make sure it has contact will normally fix this problem. Be very careful with bending. You'll see it's not that strong of a material. Another thing to check is the set screw on the wiper. if it came loose then the wiper will not move. This screw adjustment is how you can correct your gauge reading. Another words Full is Full and Empty is Empty.

Well, I took out all the fuses and after making sure they were all good I cleaned up the ends and cleaned up where they snap into on the fuse block and they (signals) worked. After trying a few times I put the cover back on the fuse block, tried again, and now they dont work again. Something I fount that seemed strange, was most of the contacts on the fuse block (both ends of the fuses) only show around 10 volt. The battery is showing just above 12 volts. I tried to use a jumper wire direct from the battery to each fuse just in case and it didnt help anything. Now when I put on the signal (when it is not working/blinking) it still kills the lamp in the fairing, so I know it cant be the switch. What happens when the blinker unit goes bad? Is it possible that when bad it will work sometimes and not others? What about the self canceling unit?

Well, I went ahead and bought a flasher, and so far so good. It seems to be working.
One of the next things I have to do is either try to repair some scratches on the windshield. or replace it. I know where there is a used 85 1200 windshield, but based on what I have found it is different than my 83 1100. Dont know if it would work or not??

I'd go with a new windshield. They're not that expensive, and it's so wonderful to have a crystal clear scratch-free windshield!
