no brake lights !

Postby fynespirits » Fri Sep 18, 2015 10:14 am

Hi all , got my first wing this week and got it running by cleaning the carbs out that where full of rust deposits .
went for a ride and noticed that my indicators where staying on permanent at idle ?
is this normal ? Also my brake light has stopped working and also the compressor for the suspension has stopped working !!
fuses in the false tank appear ok and bulbs work fine !
I still have side lights working ( head and tail ) just no brake lights or indicators .
where should I begin now please ?
also does anyone have a pdf manual for a gl 1100 aspencade 1982 please
thanks for any help offered .
just want to get back on the road and riding this beast again !

My money is on a bad ground wire some place... But I do not know.... I'm like Sgt. Shultz.... I know Nothing..lol Oh crap your in the UK you guys have no idea what I am speaking of.. Long story sorry...It was reference to an old American TV show...Hogan's Hero's...One of my favorites, Sgt. Shultz was this big goofy ass prison guard and the American prisoner's in the German camp were clever along with their Allies , they danced around Shultz getting away with lots of stuff thus making him look all the more goofy,,, this show was the funniest, most creative show I have ever seen, I couldn't wait until it came on every night...But I'd check my ground wires for your problem it's probably from the switch.. :D

Guaranteed you have a bad ground. When you engage the brakes, the indicators are finding their ground through the brake lights, and they work.

When you say indicators, are you talking about turn signals, or something on the instrument panel?

Hi Wing admin ,
yes sorry turn signals , not idiot warning lights on dash / instrument panel !
I have now spent a good 8 hours trying to trace the fault , but now I am at a loss of what to try next
I have added a temporary earth to the bulb holders from the battery .
I have cleaned all conections on wiring harness / loom .
cleaned all bulb holders .
continuity test on all earth wires and they are fine .
HOWEVER .... after all this
at ignition switch position ....on Indicators / turn signals work fine
with engine idling ... Indicators / turn signals work fine
whilst riding or if you increase the Rev's , the Indicators / turn signals stop working
also if I signal Right > the left front marker stops working ?? Until I move the thumb switch to the left of centre !!
the switch appears to be ok o inspection and I cleaned anyway to be safe !!
I also noticed that when engine idles the volts at battery are between 12.2 - 12.4 volts
but if Rev's increase the battery shows 13.8 - 14.2 volts
I am now thinking that maybe the voltage regulator may be at fault or the flasher can itself ??
the self cancellation ecu box has been tested as described in the manual , as well as the control under the headstock .
please , please if you know what could be wrong that I have not mentioned , tell me
or can you put me in the direction of someone who might know ?
the local bike shops don't really want to get involved with a 33 year old bike with electrical problems !
especially one as intricate as this system is !!

I'm not saying this is your problem but there is a green ground wire that is bolted to the top section of the coil pack at the frame, it comes from the Regulator/ rectifier, be sure you clean that one good... I do it just for fun...... alot... find all grounds first and clean the connections up....Start with the frame one to the battery... Don't take my advice man, I blew the crap out of myself too many times...LOL

Virtually every time you get bizarre behavior like this that makes no sense (unrelated electrical systems affecting each other in odd ways) it's almost always a bad ground that is at fault.
