Hot final drive and final brake

Postby TR6 » Sun Sep 27, 2015 3:30 am

Hello friends,

I'm new here. I'm living in Germany and I have a GL1100 from 1980 (and a VF750 C [in USA called Magna V45] from 1982). I found this side a year before and I has read some articles about some problems.

But now, I have a problem and I hope some have a few tips and hints for me.

I overhauled the rear brake system, master and slave. All seals are new, also the master piston, stainless line is also new. The system is going well.
After my test ride, 30 - 40 minutes, breaking often but smooth, I was shocked: the brake disc was hot, the final drive also hot, but not the rim.

On the main stand, the wheel is turning light and the break works as before. At the differential (oil was changed last year) was no clearance to notice. But every half round, it is hearing as chippings or sand is slipping. I'm not sure it's coming from the differential.

Has someone tips or hints for me?

Kind regards from Germany

Stefan

Willkommen im Forum TR6. From your description: "But every half round, it is hearing as chippings or sand is slipping". I think a wheel bearing has failed causing the the noise and rear end to overheat.

Danke Tom. :-)

I think, I have a new winter project.

I changed the wheel bearings at my TR6. It was no problem.
I have the 'Goldwing shop manual' and I want to overhaul the bearings and final drive, perhaps. Is it a problem to drive out the bearings or any atentions?

Regards

Stefan

Hello Michael.

Yes, it's a nice forum. ;)

The ball bearings are ordered, but because the shaft seal, I'm not sure witch one.
This (without gum outside):

Or this (with gum outside):

Do you know it and is it the right seal?
