Buy a rebuild kit and change out the brushes. Also your starter is probably all dirty/carboned up. That's probably causing the wire to heat up as its drawing a lot of amps. Makes a huge difference to clean them out. I'd picked up a used one on eBay and change out the mounting bplt when u have it apart. Rebuild kits are very cheap!

OK............... I will answer the question that you asked.
Yes the stud can be replaced.
Yes the starter will have to be disassembled.

In the DIY section there is a post on rebuilding the starter but it does not go into the field. So this wont provide the information you are looking for. But it will show you what you will have to go through to get to just the case and the field coils. (see images 7, 11 and 14)

Additional info........The stud you are referring to is attached to the field in the starter. It is insulated from the case and either soldered / crimped or both the the field winding. The other end of the field winding is connected to a brush. The other brush is connected to ground.

Best of luck.

That's usually a sprag clutch issue - caused by infrequent oil changes that leave sludge in the sprags, which receives poor oil circulation.

This is a common issue and has been covered many times. Read on...

I would use half a can of Seafoam, then add oil until it shows the correct level on the sight gauge.

Any year 1000 or 1100. An '84 1200 will go too. Search "joedrum"'s posts at ngwclub.com and goldwingfacts.com. He has a 1200 in an 1100 frame with 1000 cams in the 1200 heads.
