When it dies, does it suddenly quit as if it was turned off, or does it slowly die like it is running out of gas?

Sorry for the delay from here...I just read all abut it...
With your information so far,I'll guess that your intermittently loosing volts feeding the coils(ignition system).
The hard part is trying to locate the offending area...
On your bike, the ignition switch not only feeds your lights (which stay on so the switch is probably OK),it feeds the "kill" switch on a black wire...
It leaves the kill switch on a black/white wire and goes, not only to the ignition coils, but the ignition modules too.
At this point,I do suggest removing and resurfacing the contacts in the kill switch...This is first suspect...
However...no guarantee....I have heard of a similar problem...same results about it cutting off...His trouble was located by stripping that entire wire down the harness from the kill switch till he the found a severed/broken wire near the front forks...This also explained why it would cut off when he turned the handlebars sometimes.

My 83 did the same. I traced it to a bad ignition switch. Replaced and it runs fine.
