Starter is seized up

Post by PalmBayChuck » Sat Jul 17, 2010 7:13 am

I tried to start my 82 Goldwing last night after having let it sit for about 1 month. I charged the battery up and started turning the thing over. It turned over fine, but when the engine started to fire, I heard a CLUNK sound a few times. I kept trying to start it, then the starter wouldn't turn over any more. I hear a click, but it won't turn the engine over.

I tried disengaging the start by moving the bike forward and backward while in gear thinking that maybe the starter gear was stuck in the forward position, but this didn't help.

Any idears? The only thing I saw in the forum was to try to run power to the - lead on the starter directly. I don't think my starter is broken, I just think it's stuck, but don't know how to unstick it.

These starters don't have a bendix like an automobile starter so it can't be stuck in the forward position. I'm sure the guru's on here will correct me if I'm wrong but after rebuilding the starter on my '83 I'm fairly sure what keeps the starter from turning when the bike is running takes place on the chain the starter is connected to. As is the starter can spin the chain to turn the engine over, but the engine can't move the chain. Kind of like coasting on a bicycle.

I would remove the starter following the directions on here and see if it spins freely. Its not a hard job and can be done in just a few minutes. I would do some more troubleshooting but I hate to say that off hand it sounds like something a bit more serious than a starter.

I heard that clunk on Trixie a few times when trying to start her and finally the last time it went clunk it would do nodda. When I took the starter apart I found one of the brushes not making contact and worn unevenly. If it is not the starter then your one step closer to what it is.

The starter is permanently engaged to a chain inside the engine, which turns another sprocket. This second sprocket has a sprague (one-way) clutch that engages the crank when the starter spins it.

One thing that you should also look at - what is the condition of your battery?

The battery was in poor condition. When this occurred, I was connected to my cars battery to jump the primary battery.
