39mm replacement fork caps

Postby revilorellim » Tue Oct 20, 2015 8:20 am

Hi All,

I am newish to the group, I am from Welwyn Garden City in the UK and have an naked '80 GL1100, it's being customised as we speak.

I have been reading about the improvements progressive from springs can make and will be doing this as money allows! My question I am sure someone will be able to help with is; on replacing fork caps once the new springs are in. I could easily use the old caps with the air line holes blanked off, but was hoping for a prettier fix! I have search all over for 39mm fork caps, but all searches point to Harley fork caps; so will Harley fork caps fit (I am guessing they are the wrong thread)? If they won't does anyone know of any other caps that would, ideally with a preload adjuster if possible!

Any guidance or previous experience would be greatly appreciated!

Hi All,

If anyone is interested, the 39mm fork caps for Harleys do fit the 39mm GL forks; the Harley fork tubes were actually made by Showa so have metric threads.

I now have them fitted to my front end.

Hi,
In theory any of the 39mm fork caps should fit, as all the 39mm Harley forks were made by Showa so have a metric thread, there are loads of options for Harley 39mm caps. I bought a cheap set on eBay with pre-load adjusters; I also replaced the springs for progressive. The preload adjuster fork caps I bought were a little longer that stock so effectively loaded a little more already than a stock setup, but I wanted to firm the front end up anyway.

Hope that helps
