What oil/brand and weight do you prefer to put in gl1100

Postby thunderwing » Thu Oct 22, 2015 2:10 pm

I have 1983 aspencade gl1100 and am running 10/40 motorcycle grade non synthetic oil.

Wanted to know what forum members were using and their preferences for climate, frequency of oil changes(miles?), and filter cartridge preference.

Reason for my asking is I am looking for best deal on price for oil and filter as i am still in sticker shock on the price of motorcycle oil as my price perception is still one from the 90's.

Just resurrected the bike and put 1st 1000 miles of it and quickly changed the oil. Shifts way better and looking to keep it that way

My oil preference is Honda GN4 10w30 or 10w40 depending on which weight is specified in the owners manual.

Right now HDL has a sale on and will deliver a case to your door.

my preference has been the 10w40 Mobil 1 full synthetic. 5 qt bottle from Walmart for $26. I have always used the automobile oil with no clutch issues. My wing currently hase 147,000 miles. :D :D

I was running Castrol 10w40 4-stroke motorcycle oil. But I switch the Chevron 15w40 diesel oil - without the "eco' part on the SAE badge. Two oil changes and no problems to report. Plus I don't have to special order it; I can just stop buy my regular vendor and buy a few jugs. I keep a "jockey-box" proof 1 litre jug in my saddle bag for road side top ups.
My wife is the greatest - she won't let me sell my bike - I'm less grumpy when I ride...

I used Chevron's Dello 400LE 15w40 diesel oil. make shifting much smoother and is available everywhere.changed oil and filter every 10,00km or sooner if I noticed the shifting getting a little clunky 8-)

Delo 400 LE is cheap and a very good oil. Been using it for years Also tried Shell Rotella 15-40, it's very good also.

I've been using Rotella 15W40 since I bought the bike.

Ditto, I use the same in my bikes. Really though, anything rated for a wet clutch should be ok. JASO MA rating is the important one there, this will ensure the oil was designed to be used in an engine where the engine and transmission share oil (aka, wet clutch).

I have been using wix filters lately, not too bad quality, not too bad price. Biggest thing with the filters is to A) have one B) make sure all the springs/washers are in there so that it actually does its job.
