Postby steve allen » Sun Jul 18, 2010 10:31 pm

Does anyone have a side-car or imformation of side-car that will work on 1100? I am window shopping, so Wife and daughter can ride with me. Hard to turn daughter down when she really wants to go with us, she is 6 years old.

At the Steve Saunders gathering event last week, I saw (and talked to the owner of) a GL1100 with a sidecar. It was a great looking rig, with electric trim, outboard brakes and all kinds of niceties. I don't remember however, who the owner was, or who the manufacturer was. I can find out if you like.

I did take a picture of it - however it's hard to see the sidecar behind the bike:

I would really like to hear from someone concerning sidecars, are they difficult to handle and pricing of good used one. I have 82 1100i that I rather adapt wih sidecar as opposed to selling it. I ride my 87 1200a mostly, can't ride both, but would ride 1100 more if I could take daughter alone.

Hi Steve that would be my sidecar rig. It is a Motorvation Formula 2 (Motorvation.com manufactured in Iowa. Mary the owner is great)with the flip nose option. It also has electric lean feature as well as independent sidecar brake. Take a look at the sidecar.com site of the United Sidecar Association. That is where I found this sidecar. Sidecaring is not difficult, just different. You steer instead of lean. If set up properly it is a lot of fun, my wife rides in the sidecar. Previous to this rig I had a GL1000 with a Velorex sidecar. That sidecar was a lot lighter and you had to pay a lot more attention to turns so as not to fly the car. A fellow by the name of Claude Stanley in PA. is another great source for sidecars, he is the founder of the group SCT http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/SCT/. Hannigan is another fine producer of sidecars. It all depends on what type of budget you have. PM me if you have specific questions, I will answer what I can or try to steer you to someone that may know better.

This is only my opinion; after driving the 76 GL1000 that I had with a Velorex 562 attached, I caution you the Velorex is very light and will tend to fly easily on the right handers. In my opinion I would not attach one to an 1100. Of course it can be done easily, but one might consider the heavier sidecars even if it means a little more cost. I had a lot of good times with the 76, but I was ever cautious when driving the rig. After two years now with the heavier formula 2, I am a believer that one should try to consider side car to bike ratio in terms of weight and stress that a heavier bike puts on a light sidecar.

As I found the bike and side car

The previous owner used to keep some weight in it when he ran empty.
Might be too far from your home for this one.

yes, you're right........too far from here! Years ago, I was visiting a ranch in Coleman Alberta, at the Crows Nest Pass. Beautiful Country, I'd love living there, but I'd rather ride Goldwings instead of Snowmobiles. Thank you! Steve

Steve I suggest that you take a look at Sidecar.com as a place to keep your eye out for a used sidecar. This is also a good place to seek advice on sidecars. Another good site is http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/SCT/ Group creater is Claude Stanley in PA. He is a manufacturer of custom sidecars.
