pilot screw adjust 83 gold wing

Postby T-Rat » Wed Oct 28, 2015 5:49 pm

The manual says 3 turns out for the pilot screws as a starting point so that is where I set mine....they felt awful loose and as I was sync the carbs the screw in # 3 vibrated completely out. It doesn't feel like the spring is holding any tension on the screw at all I have it assembled as screw then spring first followed by the washer and then the oring....what am I missing?

no it was all the way in then backed out 3 turns, when you do 3 turns there is no tension on the springs to keep it from moving. I think I am going to put Teflon tape on the threads on all 4 pilots because they all feel too loose. I put all new pilot screws in because two of them were broken. The screws were in the carb kits I got....I just wonder if maybe they are just slightly undersize???? I am going to get them out this weekend and I will mike them and see. I still have the 2 pilot screws that weren't broken in my parts box

I have read much on this forum that any jets or carb needles need to be OEM from mother Honda, after market parts just do not have the proper clearances and do not do what needs to be done. The pilot needles are not that costly, you could get them all replaced with OEM. :D :D

Ive just rebuilt my carbs with a kit from Japan. Very cheap but no problems. Mine is an 82 which is also 3 turns out as a start. However earlier models it says in the manual I think its something like 1.25 out. Could your carbs be off an earlier bike ? Just a thought

No because mine have the screw in idle jets and they came in 82 and 83 GL1100. 80 and 81 have the idle jets pressed in.

Did you get the broken tip of the old pilot screw out of #3?

i checked the pilot screws on my 83 and they become "free" at 3.5 turns. which is interesting in that they are adjusted in the range 2.25 to 3 turns out. just on the verge of not being controlled. what i think i will do and what i suggest to you is add 1 or 2 washers to the stack. i am not sure if the needle will seat or the spring will coil bind. but for the most part i do not care as long as the adjustment is held securely. as it is the correct mixture adjustment i am looking for not any specific number of turns. so if the spring does coil bind first then instead of the adjustment range being from 0 to 3.5 turns it will be 1 to 4.5 turns out. i am good with that.

by the way i would not recommend using Teflon tape.

I came up with the same solution that you did with the washers. Took one of the washers off the needle and went to the local Ace Hardware found some the same size and put 3 on each needle and now I can come out at least 4 turns on each screw and in to about 1 1/2 before it seems to be getting tight, which should be more than enough
