mis-fire @2500rpm I think

Postby mech63s » Sat Aug 01, 2009 8:14 pm

I need some help though I think I know the answer. I did a wet and dry compression check, although the engine was cold. I have one cylinder that is low and I am quite sure it has a valve sticking. My gl1100 misses at about 2500 util it is up to operating temp. When it is good and hot it seems to stop missing. I haven't had a chance to take it out much I have just ran it in the drive way. Please someone tell me Its not a valve and that I need to rebuild the carbs, and have them synced!!!! I would rather have the easy way out. But If I need to pull the engine and rebuild it I guess its a good experience to do so. I can't even believe I am asking all this I am a mechanic to begin with. i just need to know what role these carburators play with missing and kind of like a backfire.

Thankyou

Honestly...if it were between a valve and rebuilding the carbs, I'd take the valve! Valves are not hard - remove the crash bar, pull the valve cover off, and you're there. Could be as simple as a valve that needs to be gapped. Carbs are much more work to get out and (especially) rebuild.

If it were me, I'd have a look at the valves first, and if that has no effect, then go and play with the carbs.

look this thing is popping through the carbs at about 2500-3000 rpm, it runs rich, I think, it has good compression since I did the test (170psi) it has new carbs, I took the carbs off and cleaned them out (clean to begin with), checked the initial timing (right on). it idles good so I am leaning towards the ignition advancer assy. Any help would be of great help. I am at my wits end.
