GL1100I Chrome Covers

Postby zvacman » Wed Jul 21, 2010 2:19 pm

I know there are members that are or have de-chromed thier Wings. I am going the other way, I want to aquire every chrome part ever made for this bike. So, if anyone wants to sell chrome items for the 82 GL1100I pm me with pics and prices. I titled this post chrome covers because I am particularly looking for the chrome engine covers (sides). I bought 3 sets so far and none of them are in suitable condition.

Thanks, Z

Sand blast one of them and have them re-chromed??? Very often I see chrome sets on eBay..fuel pump, plug guards etc. etc. Note most of the after market chromed valve covers don't last the chrome flakes off..
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

Thanks for the suggestions. Shops that re-chrome items are getting very rare, at least in Michigan. The covers that I have aquired up until now are all in terrible shape, none will buff out and I sand blasted the best set I had and blew holes right through them in spots. I will continue looking.

Thanks, Z

FYI I just came across this site. Thought you might be interested. http://www.chromecrazy.net/category.php?cat=31 I don't know anything about them. They have some chrome for the 1100. They also had chrome valve covers.

Just thought I'd throw in my experience with chrome valve and timing chain cover. I too was looking for the chrome look so over the winter I removed my valve and timing chain covers and sent them out to be chromed by a company known for its excellent work. They came back looking great! However, after a couple of years and not a lot of mileage later ( at this point in time Wing was a 2nd bike ) the best chrome around started to flake off which now made the covers look worse than when just polished aluminum. I can only say be aware that chroming aluminum might not be a good idea. My current fix for the flaking problem has been to manually flake off as much as I could, scuff coat the covers and spray them out with high temp flat black paint, personally I like the look on my Wing can't say it is for all. Probably, I will look for a used set of covers take them into the shop, polish the aluminum and seal with a high grade lacquer.

That is what I have for my valve covers. The aluminum is polished and then it has some kind of thick clear coat over them. It is almost a "plastic" feel to them. They stay nice and shiny and don't require any maintenance. I have seen the chrome timing covers still available for the 1100 that you can purchase new. I don't know if that would be any better.

Are these what you are looking for? I'm not sure what a fair price is? Does $60 plus shipping sound reasonable? I also have a set markland floorboards and the rack that wraps around the saddle bags for sale.
