cant put in gear ?!?

Postby toyfan1 » Sat Nov 21, 2015 5:58 pm

1980 Interstate just got it back from massive amounts of work done to carbs, brakes, tires etc. i am finally at a point of trying to move it under its own power but no.. the neutral light did work at one point but now does not illuminate. when running it with side stand up, will shut off the moment i put it in gear. i had this prob before on a Katana and found a safety side stand switch wiring was messed up. I do not see any form of safety switch on the Wing. what am i missing?

I don't think they had kick stand safety switches back then. Could someone have installed one? I think Wingadmin and a few others have built their own.

The clutch also has a safety style circuit of two wires that plug into the hand lever mechanism - if they are not connected or disconnected somewhere along the wiring the bike will shut off as soon as you put it in gear.

It is Page 160 items 12 & 13 in Section 7 of Honda Haynes manual.

super. ill look into that. i went out and since its on the center stand i fired that bad boy up, jiggled the wires at the clutch, pulled it in and dropped into 1st. it didn't stall?!?!? what did happen though was the tire started spinning immediately and changed speed with the throttle. Hmmm...clutch pulled in and tire spinning?? clutch cable adjustment or stuck clutch plates?? how does one tell that apart?

IF the clutch is stuck - when on the centre stand and engine running and in gear, hold the throttle to keep it going, pull the clutch in and apply the rear brake - it will break loose hopefully - or zip tie the clutch lever pulled in, and apply firm pressure to the rear brake pedal, it should disengage - but depends on how long it may have been sitting.
Stuck plates will normally loosen when clutch pulled in as the engine oil will/should circulate on the plates - have you put any fresh oil in or checked the clutch adjustment?

i will certainly try that. it does have 4 qts fresh oil in it(SAE 30WT) and new filter. i have not ridden it yet and has been sitting for 12+ years. will switch to bike specific oil come spring when i start to ride again.

SAE 30WT doesn't sound right to me. I think you should be looking more at 10W40. I don't know that it would cause your clutch issue though.

we would see that in the shop we would put the tire on a solid wall let idle pull in clutch lever and pop in gear be ready to hit kill switch. trans is strong enough to take it .but rule out linkage problems first

30wt is not correct oil but read on Randaks site to use 30wt to flush the engine out but dont ride it. run till warm then drain and refill w appropriate oil and filter change.

The neutral and clutch switch circuit only interrupt the starter solenoid.

Correct. The GL1100 does not have anything stock from the factory that would kill the engine when shifted out of neutral, like the newer bikes do (with their sidestand switches). I would start looking for custom aftermarket wiring added by a previous owner. In particular, examine the wire leading from the neutral switch up to the display - if there is wiring added to do this, it will likely tap into that wire at some point.

I have unstuck clutches by putting trans in high gear, and then while holding the clutch, rock the bike forward and backward.
30 wt oil to thick when cold-probably not helping the clutch problem much.
When they took the carbs off, they may have unhook the ground wire just in front of the coils, and it's picking up enough ground to run through the neutral light circuit,"as long as it's in neutral".
I think I would look for a ground fault.
My exercise bike is a goldwing.
