Rear caliper

Postby blackomen » Sun Nov 29, 2015 1:59 pm

I have a 1983 Gl1100 interstate. The rear caliper is toast. The po had snapped off the bleeder screw flush with the housing. I tried drilling into the screw and removing it with a screw extractor. The side of the housing broke off the length of the bleeder screw.

The best part is the front left caliper also has the bleeder screw snapped off. I'm going to take that one to a machine shop and see if they can Rome it without destroying the caliper.

Anyways, what calipers would be compatible with my bike? Should I be looking for one off an 83 interstate specifically? EBay listings seem to have all calipers off all years as being interchangeable. That doesn't seem right...

Probably your best bet is to source a used GL1100 caliper on eBay or elsewhere. It will just bolt into place, and you won't have to worry about cylinder volume, piston diameter or anything else.

So, will any gl1100 rear caliper work or do i need one off an 83 interstate?

I ordered a rear caliper on eBay that was taken off an 83 interstate. And then I picked up a 85 aspencade frame from Craigslist. It still had some parts on it that I wanted. I took off the fuse block and some other parts and noticed the rear caliper looked familiar.

Side by side on the bench I would say both calipers are identical. Not seized and with new looking pads. I installed it on the 83 and it does the trick. Still haven't got the eBay one in the mail yet.
