rear brake caliper

my 83 brake rear caliper keeps seizing up after I prime it up, whats the remedy? needs a kit? Dave.

Likely the return port on the rear master cylinder is clogged. If you look in the gl1100 articles section, you'll find a "how to" for getting the master cylinder fixed up.

The fact that you have an 83 makes things a little more interesting. I will get to that in a bit……

In your original statement you ask “whats the remedy? needs a kit?”. If the pistons are stuck mechanically in the caliper (opening the bleeder has no affect) then yes you will need a rebuild kit and rebuild the caliper. That would be the correct answer regardless of year.

Now with an 83 if the master cylinder was the cause of the caliper being hydraulically locked then the front right caliper would also be locked as they are linked. If it is only the rear that is locked hydraulically (frees up by opening the bleeder) then the proportioning valve would be the cause.
