What is this hole in cylinder for?

Postby Dan Lumbye » Thu Dec 10, 2015 1:10 pm

Hi

I just bought a 1981 GL1100.

I was wandering, what this hole is for. There is M6-tread in the hole.

It's not for anything. You'll notice there's one on the other side as well, tucked in behind the fuel pump:

Maybe for use during casting or honing the cylinders? Or during assembly?

the same casting is used for both left and right side. it is only how it is assembled with the cams and other bits that make it right or left. the threaded boss that you are referring to is for the outboard hold down bolt on the timing belt covers. it is less expensive to manufacture a head that will fit both sides having extra features that wont be used (on the aft side of the head) than it would be to have unique casting and machining operations for the left and right.

On my 76 there is a points cable clamp mounted there. So it was originally there for a reason on the gl1000s.

I had some Markland aftermarket accessories that used that boss as a attachment point. Not sure what Honda intended it for.
