Unusual shape on oil-level viewer

Postby Dan Lumbye » Thu Dec 10, 2015 1:18 pm

Hi

This might be a stupid question, but this is my first GL1100.

On every picture i have seen, is the viewer round. Why is that? Is it an older engine? The engine number fits the 1981 cycle.

oblong is the only shape I have ever seen on the wing of that age. even a 96 Suzuki intruder had the oblong oil window. Your bike is normal. :D :D

In either late 1981 or early 1982 they switched from the oval shape window to a round shape window.

The 80 engine had an oval shape and the 83 had a round shape or the other way around.
When I went to sell an 80 wing with an 83 engine. I had a question of really which year is this bike. He looked at the shape of the oil window and could tell it was an 83 engine.

If anyone looks at my Alaska pics and sees a pic of my 83 wing, the shape of the window on that engine is an 80

Could, maybe, Honda be making castings at the same time with different molds or masters, just a little bit different? Sounds like typical Honda to me.

If you check the engine numbers you may find the motor has been swapped. 82 and 83 had round oil level with a wiper to clean the inside of the glass off.

Well suppose that's a possibility if it could be confirmed.
FYI: both my bikes have wipers in the oblong or oval shaped sight glass as well.

Only the very first of the GL1000, in 75, didn't have a wiper.

Say, you're sort of an authority on old wings right?

How about the window shape question?

Seems like a mixed review in replies with no clear answer.

When did Honda go from an oval to a round oil level window?

I believe it was partway through the 1982 model year.

All 1981 owners definitely say they have oval windows.

The window on my 1982 Aspencade, as well as the window on the spare 1982 engine that I have, are round. Other 1982 owners have said they have an oval window.

All 1983 owners definitely say they have round windows.

Well, I'll be quite honest here. The '83 has the round window, but I'm not at all sure when it was adopted. I would take a guess that when they overhauled the 1100 engine for the 82 model, moving the ignition system to the front for instance, that could have been the time they altered it.
The oval window was an odd feature, as all the models used a round glass with wiper behind it, so I guess someone saw sense for that upgrade. They used the same glass unit in the VT250F as well.

Was that an upgrade-are the round ones better somehow?

Ok,
a mid year production change sounds reasonable to me. I have an 82 1100 with an oval sight glass. Someone suggested the engine must have been changed and I knew it hadn't. Unusual but plausable.

My 80 and 82 Interstates both have oblong windows. My 83 Naked has the round window which I find much easier to read. I do not know when in 82 Honda changed but if it helps solve this mystery, the last part of my VIN is 201160. I am assuming that that is the sequence number .
