Update on "The Wanderer"
Well, this has been quite a journey. Here's an update:
1981 Gl 1100 bought for next to nothing about 2 months ago. Ran systems check and she was emitting what appears to be steam/smoke whatever you want to call it out of left tailpipe only.
Change both head gaskets, new radiator, thermostat and she still emitted smoke from left tailpipe.
Replaced left head and of course head gasket and still smoke/steam from left tailpipe.
Here's a video of the problem
Can't figure this one out.

Re: Update on "The Wanderer"
im sure you did an excellent rebuild on it, but is it possible you might have a hair line crack in the left side of the engine block? it looks and seems like you have water getting into the left cylinders from somewhere. if that's steam vapor, does it have an antifreeze smell or an oil smell to it? and does it go away after a while? that appears to be more than just normal moisture/condensation coming out of that left tail pipe.

Re: Update on "The Wanderer"
I went ahead and pulled the left tailpipe and look what I found, #2 appears to be emitting something. I placed a paper towel under it and almost set it on fire. Could this be fuel vapor. #2 plug has always smelled like gas.

Re: Update on "The Wanderer"
Has to be carb issue. Will remove them next and check. Everything is relative when it comes to these old bikes, yes?

Re: Update on "The Wanderer"
OK, since your now thinking a carb issue, is it possible that some water got into the left 2 carbs?

Re: Update on "The Wanderer"
#2 carb problem, stuck float, bad float needle and seat, wrong float setting.I'd pull the carbs and go through them real good. You said the plug smells like gas, classic sign of flooding cyl. with gas. What does the (smoke, steam) smell like? Whats the compression like in that cyl.?

Re: Update on "The Wanderer"
float heights are way off it sounds like... I agree with the above statement, Seats and needle jets...

Re: Update on "The Wanderer"
have you checked the compression ???
the condition shown in the video could be caused by an exhaust valve that is not properly seating.
