Ticking noise

Postby lovig214 » Sun Jul 25, 2010 5:54 am

I have a ticking noise coming from the engine. I set the valves but there is still a ticking noise. I have tried to pinpoint it with a screw driver as a stethoscope can't find it. I hear it at idle and at highway speed. At idle in the garage I'm not sure but it almost sounds like a chain slapping a little??? It can be heard on both sides of the bike. I can really tell for sure but I don't think it is rhythmic. Any Ideas where to start or what it might be?

Thanks Craig

Check around the exhaust gaskets. A small leak can start out sounding like a ticking noise before the leak becomes louder.
Let's hope it's not something more serious.

I heard what sounds like the same ticking noise (at Idle) yesterday when I finished washing my bike. (1981 GL1100) I checked the sparked plugs and I think the left side wires were loose. I pushed both wires in toward the plug socket. I restarted and the noise was gone. Not sure if that could be it. Just thought I would share my experience. Good Luck.
