1983 GL 1100 low compression

I have a 1983 interstate GL 1100 that i have been working on got it from a guy who said it had been sitting for a while so i had the carbs rebuilt put new timming belts on and check my compression on 1&3 it was low is it the vavles or rings?? Thanks for the help.

Too bad you spent all that time and money on the carbs and belts... hopefully it's just the valves adjusters being too tight. Otherwise you can put a small amount of oil into the spark plug hole (about a teaspoons worth) and retest the compression.

If the compression rises dramatically then it's rings. If it remains about the same then it's valves.
Before you try anything else pull the valve covers and check the valve clearance on all cylinders. You might get lucky.

Did the oil in the cylinder thing and stayed the same and i already adjusted the vavles ... so i guess i am pulling the head off is what you are telling me then . thanks for the info.

i had low comp. on the2-4 cyl,my timing belt was off 1 tooth might ck. it

Ok well I got the head off and the intake vavles hit the top of the pistons so bent vavles thanks for the help guys .

Sorry to hear that. Always pull the engine through by hand after changing belts to prevent this from happening!

Yep i did that i think this was done before me is my guess so that is what you get when you buy an old bike that someone has played with. Funny thing is i have a chance to pick up another one like this one for $300 that has been sitting for along time in a garage was thinking of picking it up for a parts bike but it looks great sooo who knows i may but after what this one has done to me any way thanks for the help this site is great!
