No start and loud backfire from right exhaust

Postby colin.crow » Thu Jul 29, 2010 1:29 am

Hey, I just got my '82 GL1100A back together after replacing the stator, and it fired up and charged just fine, but when I went to take it for its first ride, I accelerated in first gear, and when I let the throttle go to shift into second, the engine died. Now all it will do is turn over and occasionally a loud POP comes out the right tailpipe. Any thoughts? Thanks guys.

SORRY BUT IT SOUNDS AS IF THE TIMING MAY HAVE JUMPED ON YOU AS A MISFIRE OUT THE EXHAUST INDICATES THIS. YOU CAN TRY PLUGS FIRST BUT AN ENGINE DOESN'T USUALLY FIRE OUT THE EXHAUST PORT WITHOUT THE TIMING ALLOWING SUCH AN EVENT TO OCCUR. BE CAREFUL THO AS THESE ARE ZERO CLEARANCE MOTORS AND IF IT GETS TOO FAR OUT OF TIME THE PISTON WILL COME UP AND HIT A VALVE RESULTING IN A VERY DEEP WALLET BECOMING SUDDENLY SHALLOW.

Yeah, that was my thought, too. I was just hoping somebody else had something a little more hopeful to say. Regarding piston/valve clearance, do you know how far out of timing it has to be to screw it up?

More than a tooth out and you can hit..two for sure..spin it by hand ..if it gets stuck stop and take front covers off an check belts/cam wheels.

Ok, here's what I've found out. The timing does not appear to be out, all the marks line up. So I checked the ignition wires to the plugs, and they're all producing spark. I don't have my spark plug socket here so I was unable to remove the plugs themselves. I'll do that in the near future. There were multiple marks on the cam sprockets, and I wasn't sure if it was on the right one or not. I adjusted it to another mark that was one tooth away from the one it was on, and rotated the engine through to make sure it wouldn't interfere. This resulted in the same thing, so I put the timing back where it was. I'm pretty baffled.

should be seeing a T-1 mark on the wheel in side the engine . did you remove the fly wheel plug to see timming marks?

Yes, I removed the plug, and there is a short series of marks that reads "T 1 F". The marks next to the T are lined up with the marks on the case. And the marks on the cam sprockets are also lined up with the marks on the casting behind them.

Then your good to go i was only off by 2 marks and bent the valves but it looks like your good check plugs to see if they are foul out .

Alright guys, I'm giving up on this thing. Maybe it's an easy fix that I just haven't figured out. Anybody interested in two GL1100 parts bikes? here's the link: http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/mcy/1939403858.html I'd love to see them go to somebody who knows what they're doing and wants a bunch of parts for their bike.
Thanks everyone!

I would go through the carbs and clean them. Probably the main jets are clogged.
