83 GL1100 Interstate Lost Fairing Power

Postby Glitch » Thu Jan 28, 2016 9:45 am

I have a 1983 Goldwing I bought about 3 months ago that is having overnight electrical issues. I don't understand what could cause these but maybe you all could help me out if you have had similar problems.

My fairing is completely without power. I got it out of the garage this morning and the radio and clock are completely dead. Everything else works (speedometer, tachometer, high and low beams and my parking lamps on the fairing work but my radio and clock are now dead. Any ideas?

There are 3-5 fuses in the rats nest of wires behind the left turn signal. You may have a blown fuse.
Check that the plug is fully seated on the left side of the fairing.

Wow, you are right that looks a little messy. Alright, I will check to see if I have blown a fuse and reply with findings. Thanks! :D

At the bottom under the left pocket is a plug. The faring wiring goes through it.Mine had a corroded connection.I had to bypass it.

If a PO has not chopped up the wires in there-do not worry which connection is which -- they are color coded and only fit the correct plug. There are a couple of extra ends in that mess with color . So do not fret if you have an extra wire or two.

+1 on fuse or bad plug.. Note the fuse are in white clam shells and you have to take out the left turn signal to get to them. like these.

I wanted to post an update for my findings. I looked under the left front turn signal only to find that the fuses were okay. Scratching my head I looked to the fuse block on top of the fuel tank and they looked okay.... at first. I checked them with the tester and saw I was getting a connection on one side of the fuse but not the other on 4 of the 6 fuses. I removed the fuses and cleaned the connections and replaced the old dirty fuses with good ones. The last owner of this bike bypassed these terrible fuses by wrapping them in tin foil of all things. Real smart guy. I can see there are a lot of electrical shortcuts I am going to have to fix on this bike but it will be worth it. After cleaning the fuse block connections and replacing a few poorly spliced terminals and fuses I now have power everything again. Even my problematic turn signals which only worked after riding a while work first time every time. Thanks for the help everyone. My electrical demons thus far are now fixed. :D

With no power it seems to always be a fuse. Glad you have your power back and thanks for telling us what you found. This will help the next person who has a similar problem.
