83 GL1100 Interstate turn signals only work when the bike is warmed up?????

Postby Glitch » Thu Jan 28, 2016 10:35 am

Hi again, I decided to separate my bike's electrical issues into different posts to convey better clarity with each issue. Here is the issue I am having right now.

I start the bike in the morning and let it warm up, especially since now it's very cold here, for about 10 to 15 minutes. However, when I take off I can't use the turn signals until the bike has ridden awhile and then they begin working. In the summer this may take maybe a ride of about a few miles. This winter they don't seem to work until I have ridden for about half an hour. Why would they only work when the bike is warm?

Either low voltage feeding the flasher or a bad flasher.
Check it with a volt meter when it does not work and the turn signal switch is on loading the flasher.

Do you mean the toggle switch or the relay for the flasher? I did managed to get it working just now by repeatedly turning the switch in different directions. It worked until I got back to the Honda motorcycle service shop here in town. After I left and started it up.... out again.

I did mean to measure the volts on the flasher.
Keep in mind that power goes to the flasher first then to the selector switch and to each lamp(s).
You can loose volts at any part.
Its possible that the switch contacts are dirty enough to stop the electric from getting to the lamps and the volt meterbor test light would show this.
Get it where it won't work...Probe the flasher power input,,,,output to the switch and then the output of the switch.

My 83 Int. did the exact same thing not long after I bought it. It still had the original factory (round, metal) flasher. I replaced it with a new factory flasher (plastic, square) and never had a problem since. I don't know if an automotive flasher would work...maybe someone else can answer that.....

An automotive flasher will work just fine, I put one into my GL1100 when its OEM flasher died.

Just an update on this post. I checked through the rats nest behind the left turn signal chasing another electrical issue only to find that all the fuses were fine there. So i went back to the fuse block underneath the tank and checked those. Just looking at them you think they would have been fine. Using my electrical tester I saw I was getting a signal on one side of the fuse but not the other on 4 of the six fuses. I removed all the fuses and made a trip to Autozone to get new fuses, cleaned the fuse block and the connections and installed new fuses. Everything fired back up and started working. Even the flashers work now first time every time. Sometimes it's the simple things that cause the worst problems. Thanks for the help everyone. This issue is now fixed. :D

Those glass fuses are fragile, and the glue holding the metal onto the glass gets old and hard, then fails. After I had that happen to one of my fuses, I replaced all of them.
