lubricating the tachometer cable

Postby newomij » Wed Feb 03, 2016 2:28 pm

I thought I saw a DIY thread on how to lubricate the tachometer cable but I don't see it. Maybe because I'm near sighted but, is there one? If not, I would venture to guess that I would remove the cable from the tach and pour a liquid into the cable and let gravity do the rest? Question is, what liquid?

I never liked using a liquid lubricant that stayed (and dried out) in the cable. I've always use a dry graphite lubricant. You spray it in the cable, it is an aerosol with a tube (like WD-40 has) but it looks (and stains) like black spray paint. Once the carrier evaporates, it leaves behind an extremely slippery graphite lubricant.

The benefit is that you get a very good lubricant, without the oily film left by some lubricants, which can collect dust and grime.

Spraying this dry lubricant, one good blast down the cable or spray for a few seconds?

I spray it until it starts dribbling out the other end, then I let it hang until it's dry. I also do it outside...did I mention it stains like black spray paint. :)

I've always pulled the cable out of the sheath and coated the cable with automotive chassie lube, I have done this on the speedo and tach cable on my '75 cb 750 and '79 super K since I've owned them ( early '80's ) and I've never replace them on either bike

Pull the cable out..CLEAN the cable and the tube..then lube with whatever your choice is..graphite is best less stuff to collect dirt but chain lube, grease whatever works too.
