Knocking noise when hit start button

Postby ReneGladu » Wed Feb 10, 2016 3:37 am

Hey everyone, this has probably been posted somewhere but I can't find anything.

Before storing my 1983 GL 1100I I had to boost her because she spent the night in freezing cold. She wouldn't start with the starter not catching 2 times out of 3.

Since then when I hit the starter button she only knocks in the solenoid relay. Is it just the solenoid that is done or is it something more serious.

I purchased a new battery and have yet to install it because of restrictions inside the storage facility.

Thanks for the help

René

From your description it is probably just the solenoid. When cold the starter clutch rollers can stick and be problematic trying to engage. They usually allow the starter to whirrr, then when you release the button they clunk when dropping into place.

I would make sure you battery is good enough. Sometimes the voltage looks good without a load, but drops more than they should as soon as there is a load. I have had them that would hold 12.6 overnight. Click the starter and it would drop to 2 volts.

Lots have luck by running 1/2 to a full quart of Marvel Mystery Oil or the like for a few hundred miles before an oil change. You have to baby it during that time. I have even used two cycle oil and diesel just before a change . Often the starter cogs in the starter clutch just get gummed up with old oil residue and the problem is worse when cold. Eventually the cogs, pins, buttons get warn and can stick. Then it's an engine out repair.

Hi Rene,
Are you saying that the solenoid clicks when you press the starter button and the starter motor spins but doesn't turn the engine or the solenoid clicks but the starter doesn't spin? If it's the latter, then your starter is no good or the power is not getting to it, which could still be a solenoid fault.
