Rear shock fell apart

Postby blackomen » Wed Feb 10, 2016 4:41 pm

I was removed the rear wheel to get a new tire put on at the Honda dealer. I got the wheel from under the bike and was leaning it against the bench when I heard something fall under the bike. Yeah, the rear shock fell apart. Are these worth trying to disassemble and rebuilding our am I better off just getting new shocks? I don't have any experience with these progressive air shocks.

That's the top eyelet that came off by the way.

Guys rebuild the stock ones all the time..not sure about progresses..does it look like it just unscrewed itself..or did it strip the threads??..metals bits in the threads or clean?? Nothing to lose if you take it apart..to see. Several how to's fro rebuilds on various sites..Stock ones but the progressives should be too much different you coudl do your how how to thread.. :D

I would guess that the female threads are gone where that shaft screws into the other part. Don't see any way for that to come unscrewed by itself.

I looked at the thread for the top eyelet and it is perfect, no metal shavings or signs of cross threading or anything weird. I think if I want to attempt to put it back together I'll need to build a jig to compress the shock. The springs are internal so I'll probably build a little cage to attach to my floor jack. Something that won't fail cause I don't want to die from the force that shock would go through my head.

Just got a box from motorcycle super store. Russell adonized reusable fuel filter, four new ngk plugs, and both throttle Cables. Apparently the clutch cable shipped from somewhere else and should be here eventually. Should have this bike ready for spring before spring, lol.
