Noise in front end

Postby reggiefavre » Wed Feb 10, 2016 11:36 pm

Gentlemen, I have a problem, it is with a 81 1100 interstate. When I hit any size bump, pot whole or any thing that moves the front forks there is a loud knocking noise coming from either the forks or the fairing. I have pulled the front wheel to see if any slack in forks, they seem tight. I have checked the nut at the top of the triple tree, the stem nut. I have checked every nut, bolt clamp. I took the pouches out, looked and felt all in and and around the fairing.
Has any one ever had a noise like this in their GL. I have checked engine guards, engine mounting bolts, coil mounting bolts, radiator bolts, you name it, I think I have checked it, but I must have missed something. If any one has any ideas let me know.
Thanks ahead of time

I gather you haven't found the problem yet. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=31657

sounds like your forks might be low of oil and your hearing them slap on the inside when they rebound back up
my 1200 did that and when I replaced the inner springs with progressive springs and refilled the forks it went away

Haven't had a chance to work on it to day. Will remove front wheel tomorrow and pull forks out and do a tale down to inspect them. Thanks for the info. I will let you know in a few days if problem is fixed. I am waiting on a new front tire and I don't want to take wheel off twice. I got the new rear tire today and will install it

Hold the front brake on and pump the front down as hard as you can - hopefully it might shed a bit of light on the problem.

If it goes down too easily - then you may be short on oil or the springs might need replacing/spacers etc.

I would replace the fork oil for starters and fill with the right amount, then test the ride again.
