Help me ID this GL1100

Postby Cohiba54 » Tue Feb 16, 2016 9:06 pm

The VIN on the title is GL14003663, Let me know if you know what those numbers are.

I looked for numbers around the steering head and various spots on the frame and engine but didn't see any (may be looking for love in all the wrong places). Didn't really have enough light and the area around the bike is cluttered and too tight for me to get a real good look see, I try again tomorrow.

Go here viewtopic.php?f=4&t=31814 on the GL1100 page for what all needs to be done to the bike.

I could be wrong, I've been wrong before.....I did get married once. It looks to me like you have a gl1000 frame, I don't remember any comstar wheels other than reverse comstar from 80 (first year of 1100), up.The front brake master cylinder is also gl1000. This link shows the frame to be 1978. viewtopic.php?f=19&t=31820
does the clutch cable run down next to the rear brake peddle or go to the back of the engine? I'm just wondering if you have an 1100 or a 1000 engine, you have 1000 carbs, I wonder if the valve covers are the only thing 1100? not sure if they would fit an 1100 but I am curious what you have there.

ok I see the cable now, so you do have an 1100 engine in what I believe is a 1000 frame. No big deal, just good to know for getting parts.

I agree - it looks like it might be a bit of a Frankenbike, but I suspect you've got a GL1000 with GL1100 valve covers on it.

Does it have points, or electronic ignition? What's the engine serial number?

OK, I had a look at the other pictures you posted on your resurrection thread - the engine is definitely a GL1100 engine, with GL1000 carbs. The frame looks to be GL1000 as well, with GL1000 controls (brakes, etc) and wheels.

So based on preponderance of parts, and the frame serial number (which is really what matters), I'd say you have a 1978 GL1000 that someone shoehorned a GL1100 engine into.

Thanks for the input WingAdmin and deanbw. I'll be heading over this evening to snag as many numbers as possible. But heck if there's been an engine swap the frame number plate may be gone. Will let yall know later what I find.

As normal with most motor type forums, the truly passionate hit the nail on the head and make their site a one of a kind place.
Again thanks!

Allright here we go.
Frame per the vin code and the big bold text make it a 1978. the engine is a 1982, there's been a swap for sure. Yall correct me if i messed that up... But I'm still unclear about it being a GL1000 or GL1100.

Did Honda contract Windjammer for fairings? I'm also not sure about the sidecases and trunk, they look aftermarket to me. What do yall think?

I dont know who made your bags, bates maybe? honda line? not sure if vetter made bags like that. I don't believe vetter was contracted, I think the fairings were dealer installed, could be wrong but I think that's how it worked, or you bought it naked and dressed it yourself. Honda later contracted tupperware for the body work on the factory dressers, I think starting with the 1100

To answer your question you have a gl1000, it just happens to have an 1100 engine in it, the title will go by frame vin

Honda did not install fairings until they started MAKING (Hondaline) fairings for the GL1100. So your Vetter fairing is aftermarket.

The bags do not look like Vetter bags, in fact I was thinking they were GL1100 OEM bags. Show a picture of the insides of the bags and I can tell you for sure.

Gl 1000 frame, gl1000 carbs..check the number on the carbs and we can tell you which year the carbs are, if electronic ignition equals 1100 engine..no points on the left side..just a cover to hide the hole, Honda bags but the trunk is not Hondaline..not sure what.. So it's not either but some of each.

HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,
