GL1100 water pump stopped leaking

Post by BRS » Wed Feb 17, 2016 8:36 pm

I have acquired a 1982 GL1100 with 77,000 miles. It has been sitting for 2-3 years that I know of and was started occasionally. I originally found that gas had leaked into the oil and it was about 1 quart over filled due the the gas mixed in with the oil. I changed the oil, filter and coolant. It had a smoking problem and I changed the valve guides and that corrected the problem. When I first got the bike and got it running properly I noticed a few drops of coolant from the water pump hole at the bottom after I ran it for a while. After numerous rides and about 100 miles I noticed it stopped leaking. And 100 miles later still no leaks. I checked the hole at the bottom and it is not plugged. I have never had any coolant in the oil. Could this be a result of running/driving the bike again and now that the leak has resealed? I had originally planned to change the pump when it first started leaking but now I am temped to just leave it. Has anyone ever had this happen?

When I had my 1100, every winter while the bike sat it would leak a little from the weep hole and every spring it quit. Could be that just sitting for extended periods of time it could leak. When my pump did go out there was no mistake that it was bad. Coolant poured out. I would watch it fir awhile but should be good.

What he said. Might consider a front end renewal if you plan a trip.

Same here. My GL1100 would leak drops of coolant over the winter, but seal itself up when it got warm.

When it finally did go, it would dribble coolant out there pretty much constantly whenever the engine was running, and drip slowly when the engine was off - it was pretty obvious that it was time to fix it.

If I was planning a long trip I might think about doing it first, but otherwise I'd let it be.
