How do I remove the upper fairing?

Postby dph03 » Sat Feb 20, 2016 5:29 pm

How do I remove the upper fairing? Is it remove the lower panels then about 6 bolts to remove the upper?
I have to change the left controls. Do I have to remove the upper to get into the electronics behind the headlight?

I don't think you need to remove the fairing to do the left controls. You can access alot of the wiring by taking out the left pocket on the fairing and removing the radio and also removing the turn signals.what's wrong with your controls? If you remove the headlight all you are going to find is the headlight plug poking out through the fairing. If you are having trouble with any of this I don't live too far away from you, maybe we could meet somewhere and I could show you what is involved.

My way is to get underneath w/10mm socket. Remove 2 nuts from studs on each side. Remove bolts that goes into the fairing bracket, 2 each side. One of these screws from the inside of the fairing bracket toward the outside so you might have to get it out by reaching across from underneath the fairing with an extension rather than from directly underneath.

Protect your front fender with a towel or something. I do it alone but another person would not hurt. One nut will keep it from falling out. I get the last nut out by hand while balancing the fairing then lift it up. It's clumsy but it is not that heavy, might take some wiggling. Be sure to unplug the harness and any other wires such as an antenna wire. And yes, the lowers have to come off first. Should be 3 screws each. The screws go through little metal collars that may stay in the pieces so keep track of them if they are present.

You also have 4 bolts by the front wheel to take off.

4 bolts by wheel
2 nuts from studs on each side

To do the controls you do not have to take the fairing off.

That's right. I forgot about a couple in my previous post. Here's a more complete picture.
