Gl1100 starter solenoid rat's nest

Postby ajax451 » Mon Feb 22, 2016 7:48 pm

Hey all, long time lurker, first time poster. Ive recently procured a 1981 gl1100, and the previous owner fancied himself an electrician. The starter solenoid harness has been completely hacked up, and no matter what combination I try, I can't get it right. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bike side of connector:
Red/White goes to Regulator/Rectifier
Red is the "Batt" in the Ignition switch
Green/Red splits to Silicon Rectifier and looks like it goes to Clutch switch
Yellow/Red goes to "Starter engine stop switch"

Solenoid side:
Red/white & red go to dog bone fuse
Green/Red & Yellow/Red go to coil of solenoid

Page 333 or so of the manual. I only have a good picture of mine after I replaced the dog bone fuse, and mine is a 83... but it might steer you right.

Here is a wiring diagram found in the manual section to get you started.

Replaced the starter solenoid on my '85 LTD. Here is the schematic for the wiring:

Good luck!

Should work fine. The small yellow/red striped wire comes to the starter relay and energizes the internal coil of the starter relay letting power flow to the starter. The plain large red wire in the connector goes to the ignition switch. The larger red/white striped wire is from the regulator/rectifier to the starter solenoid and is only to charge the battery. The last wire a light green/black striped wire goes out to the electrical system.

Hope it works for you!

Okay, let me say, you're all awesome. I really appreciate the help everyone's willing to provide to a newbie like me. So I've connected all the wires according to RGBERSON's drawing. I've got lights, horn, gauges light up. But when i push the starter button, the headlight turns off, and nothing else. I can jump the solenoid with a wire and get the bike to bump, but the button's not getting me going. Any suggestions?

Keep in mind that those aftermarket solenoids are not all wired exactly the same. You might also have a bad solenoid.

So should I just presume the solenoid is bad and replace it? If it matters, I know it had worked last year.

Checked the service manual. The green/red striped wire goes to the clutch switch and shift sensor. You may want to check these as well. This happened on another fellows bike that this forum was helping.

Okay, I get 12v across the green wire with the clutch both out and in. When I shift from neutral to 1st, it drops from 12v to .4v. I don't have a service manual handy, what would this indicate?

Okay, so I ordered a replacement solenoid, it arrived today. I wired it up according to the instructions provided by everyone here. No change. Pull the clutch, push the button, the headlight goes off. No clicks, no bumps, no turning over. I consider myself to be a fairly electrically competent person, but this has me stumped. Help!
