From 81 to 82 (or 83) Wheel & Tire Conversion

Postby rkmason » Fri Mar 04, 2016 10:35 am

Has anyone done a conversion from the 1981 19" front / 17" rear Comstar wheels to either the 1982 18" front / 16" rear Comstar or the 1983 one piece cast wheels? I assume these newer wheels would be an easy upgrade for my 1981 bike, but I wanted to ask the question before I committed to do it. I intend to use my 1981 braking system with these wheels. Any other "gotcha's" to know about this conversion? Thx

its a direct and easy bolt up. use your existing rotors and calipers and wheel spacers. this is a very popular upgrade. I put 83 wheels on a 82 Aspy. 8-)

Do you (or anyone else) know if using the '82/'83 rear wheel also absolutely requires use of the '82/'83 swingarm for tire sidewall clearance due to the extra 10mm width of the rear tire? You would not have seen this issue swapping between 82 and 83 wheels.

I did the swap from 82 comstars to 83 casts.
I used my 82 brake system and wheel spacers in the front. I made no rear mods at all other then I used my 82 rear disk.
I'm not use of the wheel size and diffrence from an 81 to the later second generation Wings. I'm looking for information concerning a wheel swap from a first generation comstar to a 1980 wing. I's like to do a 78 comstar or maybe a 75 or 76 spoke wheel. Seems little information is available for going back to the early wheels.

You will have to use a 130 rear tyre on the 83 wheel in the earlier bikes. The 140 will rub on the brake torque arm on one side and the swing arm on the other.

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!
