Postby imadamine » Fri Mar 11, 2016 3:16 am

Guys the fairing on my GL1100 shakes when the road is not smooth, however I checked all the bolts that holds the fairy they are all screwed tight!
What could be the problem?

Cracked near where bolts attach?? what bolts did you check there are two on each side on the bottom and 4 or 5 across the front..Also the bracket at the front could be loose..look at a parts pic to see it.

I did check these two bolts on each side and the 4 bolts around it,
Are you saying there could be a crack where the bolts are attached??

I had the same problem with the fairting on my 1981 Interstate.
After much checking, I found the area where the fairing mounts to the steel fairing mount on the right side was completely cracked and broken out. When I removed the fairing it came apart in six pieces, the mounting area was copletely broken out..
After some research, for reasons unknown to me, it seems these fairings mostly break on the right side.
In my experience, the cracking usually starts on the lower right side, travels to the mounting area then breaks out completely.
They can be fixed with a lot of patience and time. These fairing are made from ABS plastic that has over the past 30+ years, gotten brittle. They don't flex as well as they have in the past. The repair consistes of ABS plastic sheets, ABS sprinkler system glue and a slurry of ABS glue and ABS plastic shavings. It's a process I read about on this site, and it works pretty well. Just keep in mind these fairings are old, if it has started cracking you can repair it and make that area stronger, you may experience cracking in other areas. When you have the fairing off the bike look it over carefully and repair ALL the cracks you might find at one time.
Good luck.
