best way to swap 82 fairing for 83

Postby Randiana » Sat Mar 26, 2016 7:10 pm

I hit a deer and scrapped the fairing on my 1983 Aspencade. Luckily I found a match paint fairing from 1982 model. Difference is that the 82 has the analog voltmeter instead of the lcd. Can I swap out the fairing and use the lcd gauge pod or can I swap it out and use the analog pod or do I have to take the whole fairing harness from the 83 to be compatible. I have the Honda wiring diagrams for both. and it looks like things are quite different for the LCD bike, but if I keep the LCD monitor for tach air etc. will the volt panel work. Ideas?

I believe the fairing itself is the same through all years of these second generation GoldWings.
I've changed a few of them from one year to another. Your '83 is a little dffrent in a few areas such as the digital dash and gauges but I believe they will bolt in and fit in the 82 fairing. That being said, keep in mind you are changing the fairing only. I would use everything else from your 83 in the 82 fairing,(wiring harness, gauges etc.).
Before you take the time to install the 82 fairing, take the time to inspect it very closely. These fairing are made of ABS plastic and they are over 30 years old, they are starting to get brittle and crack in some of the stress points. Small cracks will grow to larger ones and eventually render the fairing useless.
The area on the lower right side seems to be a trouble spot. Small cracks develop and run to the mounting area on that side of the bike. It eventually cracks out the bottom of the fairing where it mounts to the bracket.
If you find imperfections, repair them NOW before they become a real problem later.

Thanks for the reply. The fairing I got does have some cracking in the area you mentioned, but its way better than the nearly two halves I have from my original after deer hit. Checked today on getting some ABS and solvent to do repairs per list comments. My main question was if the 82 fairing harness would match up to the 83 aspencade digital voltmeter. Comparing wiring diagrams it appears that they might, but probably safe bet is to swap out entire late harness into early shell.

I believe I would use the 83 wiring harness in the 82 faring. You have to pull all the components out of both fairings anyway and you already know the gauges and other components work with the 83 wiring.

Yes, but fortunately the replacement fairing which is an Aspencade fairing has all components in place, including all lights, radio, etc. and has the right paint. To avoid problems trying to get wiring harness out intact and swapped there seems less chance of Fubar if you could install 82 complete. But the different voltmeters? Don't want to toast anything from laziness. Trying to be simple and safe. Thanks to all for advice so far.
