New guy to the forum.

Postby Steamboat7404 » Sun Mar 27, 2016 6:43 pm

Newby here with issues. I purchased a 1980 Honda Goldwing GL1100 for a guy who needed cash, you know the story. I have gone through the bike and it needs new rear brakes, master cylinder rebuilt and general TLC. I had to replace the headlight and put turn signals on the bike. The original owner for some reason took them off. When I bought the bike the radiator fan worked and now the fan will not come on. I have gone through all my wireing connections and still no fan. Is there a way to check the fan to see if it just died or the wiring is messed up..
Put new fuses in also.

Thanks new guy

Welcome. There is a thermostat switch that is behind the radiator. There is 2 wires that connect to this switch. They may have come off and then the fans won't work. It's a place to look.
It's not what you buy, it's what you build.

All the exposed wiring seems right. Unplugged the fan from its connector and wired directly into the battery. Fan works perfectly. Trouble must be somewhere else.

Normally the earth side of the fan is connected directly to the chassis, the other side of the fan goes to the temp switch, which then goes to the ignition switch. If the fan is not working, the motor is not seeing 12volts, so I would disconnect the 2 wires from the switch on the radiator and short them together, if there is 12volts there the fan will turn. If the fan doesn't turn with the wires shorted, you have either lost the negative connection, or the switched 12v from the ignition switch is missing, you need to get a volt meter and check if the issue is with the ground/negative connection, or the 12v side positive side. You said you changed the fuse, but the wiring could be at fault or the ignition switch is making bad contact.

Gary,

Made the fix. When I was making my way through the maze of wiring I unhook what I think is a ground (green). But in short plugged it back in and the fan seems to be working again.... Thanks for the help....
