1981 GL1100 ASPE with a 1982 Swingarm

Postby Cpowell28570 » Fri Apr 01, 2016 3:12 pm

I bought a 1981 apencade 1100 on Craigslist and the previous owner sweared that it only smoked a little and it rode fine but it was way too powerful for him. I already had a 1982 1100 in my garage that has been weather damaged like nobody's business.. I thought to myself that I had a surplus of spare parts. I went to change the tires just to find that the 81 used 130 on 17's and the 82 used 140 on 16's... No big deal but when I mounted the rim on the rear hub I noticed that the tire rubbed everything... The hubs matched up right so I was wondering if I could just swap the swingarms completely out. Any advisement?

There were no Aspencades built in 1981, I believe the first year was 1982. The tire sizes were also changed in the 1982 model year as you noted, 1980 and 81 were the same. The front wherel and tire sizes are diffrent as well.
I'm not sure which way you are swapping, are you attemping to install the 82 wheel in the 81 frame, or the 81 in the 82 frame.
I think the 81 will fit into the 82 but I don't think the 82 will fit into the 81.
I think the swing arms are the same, the problem is the rear brake caliper. The 81 is a single piston caliper that is rather large while the 82 uses a duel piston that appears smaller to accomidate the wider wheel.
I have an 80 and an 82 swingarm in the shop right now that are off the bikes and they appear the same.

I was contemplating swapping the whole swingarm... Off the 82 onto the 81... The only reason I thought it was an Aspen was because of all the trim that was added... Chrome engine covers and all that... Just wondering if the swingarms will swap

I believe the swingarms are the same, no need to swap them. The diffrence in the rear of the bikes is the rear brake caliper.

I was thinking that too but the tire rubs on one and not the other... I'm really confused.

I checked the parts fisch from Western Honda, they both have the same part number. Are you tryin g to install the 82 wheel on the 81 bike?

That is what I'm attempting.

OK, you will have to use the 82 rear brake caliper, the 82 brake caliper punch, the 82 brake disk (most likely still on the 82 wheel), all of the 82 axel spacers. I'm not sure but you might need to use the 82 master cylinder as well. I don't know if the 81 master cylinder will be compatible with the 82 duel piston brake caliper.
None of this is difficult, just a little time consuming, replacing one set up for another.
Do you know the diffrence in height between the two rear wheels, if any at all. I only ask because if the 82 rear wheel is installed and you are going to leave the taller 81 front wheel there may be a geometry issue that could cause front end wobble at high speeds. If you are going to change the front wheel to the 82 set up there would be no cause for concern. If you are going top use the 82 front wheel, it would be easier to change the entire front end to acomidate the duel piston front brakes, brake disks and wider front tire. Again, not a difficult project but time consuming.

I was just worried because the tire was actually rubbing the caliper stabilizer and the inside of the swingarm itself. I'll give it a go... The tire on the 82 is a 140 90 16 stock the tire on the 81 is a 130 90 17 the 82's is just a wider tire all together.
