GL1100 starts to run bad on freeway

Postby BRS » Mon Apr 04, 2016 2:37 pm

Hello. I have a 1982 GL1100 with 70,000 miles. I got the bike a few months ago and it has been running fine with no issues. Last week it started running bad when I exited the freeway. I checked the fuel filter and it looked bad so I replaced the filter. The bike runs great on the road except for when I am on the freeway for say 3 or more miles at 65-75 MPH. It will hold the speed but when I exit the freeway it is running bad and I think it is either missing or starving for fuel. It is still drivable and idles and after 3-5 in town miles at slower speeds 35-45 it seems to clear up and runs great. It seems to me to be a fuel issue since it only happens at freeway speeds and clears up at slower speeds. I have checked the tank, petcock, fuel lines and filter again but everything seems fine. I tried removing the gas cap while on the freeway and it didnt make a difference. When in the garage and I do remove the gas cap I do hear a sucking sound which I understand is normal. I can drive it hard all over town and it doesnt have any issues, its just at after I am on the freeway for a bit.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

This definitely sounds like fuel starvation. You have checked almost everything. The fuel pump is the next suspect.

Is their any way to test the fuel pump?

If you remove the fuel feed pipe to the carbs (the pipe from pump to carbs) and place it in a jar, turn the petcock on and spin the engine over on the starter, you should see regular spurts of fuel pumping out.
I'm assuming the pumps are the same as the GL1000 (I don't own an 1100). If there is a difference, I'm sure a GL1100 owner will add a comment.

Pretty good po man fuel pump test.
If you have fuel pressure gauge that might be better to test fuel pump performance.
The mechanical pump is only puts out around 3 psi.
Fuel pumps are the same, I own both an 1000 and an 1100.

I did as MAZ suggested and removed the fuel line to the carbs and I am getting good volume. I will try to rig up a pressure gauge and see what I get. Thanks

One other thing that springs to mind is that you say you hear a 'sucking' sound. If this is a sucking sound it means you have a vacuum in your tank, which will be holding fuel back. Usually, the fuel cap will allow air in to prevent this. It may be that you are hearing the air in the tank coming out under pressure though, as the fuel cap will allow pressure to build up in the tank to a certain level before venting it. To prove/disprove this, next time the bike starts playing up, pull over and remove the cap, momentarily, then replace and see if the performance is back to normal. If it is, you have a blockage in the fuel cap vent.

I pulled my cap out and soaked it in Seafoam for a few days, because I had the diagnosis that Maz mentioned. Although it was more prevalent within 15-20 km of filling the tank. Fixed the issue.

Try looking in the fuel tank after removing the fuel level sender to see if there is a hole in your pickup line.

Now I am going to have to check my tank also. Although I suspect it was my fuel cap.

Well I wasnt able to do a pressure test but I did remove the fuel line to the carb and I am getting good volume and pressure the best I can tell. I soaked my gas cap and made sure it was clean. I did check what I thought was sucking but it was pressure in the tank so I guess that is good. I have been running seafoam for a while hoping it would help. I tried on the freeway again with and without the cap, tired different positions on my pet **** and I am still having the same problem. I can pull over for a couple minuets and it seems to clear up until I get back up to speeds of 65 plus. When I am driving around on the streets it runs great and I can really get on it and have no issues. I am trying to do everything I can not to remove the carbs because I have never done that. If anyone has any other suggestions I am open and I appreciate the feedback I have been given. Its AZ bike week so I will stay off the freeway for now.

You mention speed, not rpms.
It would unusual for the tiny idle jets to be clear and the larger power jets to be clogged.

Maybe the vacuum advance going bad??

This one is tough to diagnose from the armchair.

That's not a very definitive test. If you disconnect the fuel line from the carbs and put it into a bottle, run the engine at 3000 rpm and you should get 15 oz. of gas/minute. Just run it for 10 seconds, measure the volume, and multiply by 6. Then you'll know for sure.
