gl100 air intake

Postby Rumman » Sun Apr 10, 2016 1:21 pm

hey folks

I rebuilt my carb on the gl1100 and now am getting gas in the top intake where the air box sits. I don't see gas leaking anywhere. engine ran strong yesterday. not riding it just running while on center stand
any ideas??

I would suggest that one or more of the carbs is flooding. Bear in mind these carbs have no overflow tubes, so if the needle valves are dirty or sticking or the float level is wrong, the fuel will overflow into the 'plenum chamber', under the air filter and into the cylinders. This needs to be sorted. If the cylinders flood with fuel while the engine is not running (hydrolock) ,when you try to start it, you will likely bend a conrod.

Thanks Maz. I will pull carb back off this weekend and check. How do I know if the float level is off?
The needle valves looked good before I put them back on. How can I test them before reassemble?

Best to check carbs on the bench before reinstalling them.Set the carbs level on the bench and fill with gas via a iv bottle.I didn't do that once and had to tear the carbs back out :x Do a search for this and you'll get some info on it.

Probably easiest to check out the full procedure either by searching on here or on Randakks Cycle Shack. It's easy to do and well worth reading up on. Clean the rubber tips of the float needles carefully with a microfibre cloth, looking for wear ridges. Clean the needle valve seats with a Q tip and polish and be sure to wash all polish residue off with carb cleaner before reassembling. If float heights and needles/seats check out ok, the brass seats may need new 'O' rings.
