Frustrated - CARBS again???

Postby processing » Fri Apr 22, 2016 1:32 pm

Hello everyone, I'm experiencing funny behavior on my GL 1100. When I'm shifting up between 3000 and 4000 RPMs and I let go off the gas throttle (I make sure the gas throttle grip is closed, because it is stuck sometimes I believe due to the Bowden) and at the same time I squeeze/engage the clutch the RPMs go widely up up to 5000. I posted this issue here but no one really had a solid answer. Please, it is not due to the Bowden acting hard sometimes. I really don't think so. Because when I twist the throttle grip closed the carburetor closes all the way. I cleaned the carburetor as best as I could. However, I'm waiting for the air cut off valve membranes and the accelerator pump membrane to come from the US. So I will pull the carburetors out again and install new air cut off valve membranes and the accelerator pump membrane. Do you think this could be contributing to this problem? Someone told me that the vacuum pistons could be stuck and not moving freely. But they do I clean them and before I installed the carburetors on the bike I checked them with a screwdriver pushed through the intake and I lifted them up and they came down easily. I am confused  anyone experienced this issue? Any help at all would be appreciated.

The vacuum slides.Stick a small mirror in the bottom of the plenum box so you can see the slides. One at a time. With the engine idling, they should all be equally closed. As you rap the throttle, each should rise and fall as the throttle is closed.
Mine would pop up about half way when the engine hit 4k rpm and drop quick.
All except one.It would stick open about half the time.Had to clean and polish all of them again. Then tested them before I put them back on with a shop vac.

Thank you! But please explain how you can see the vacum slides when the engine is idling? Vacuum slides are the pistons with the long needle right? See the picture. I would love to check them.

As Vigilmobile said - remove air filter and use a mirror in the plenum to view the slides with engine running.

a flashlight might help..airbox off, small mirror put into the plenum so you can look into the carb throat, through the screens, watch as the youir throttle her up and release one at a time.

One more thing... what is the purpose of this? See the Picture. It is throttle stop or something... but I assumed that is is linked somehow to the inside of the carb throught the philips screw (I point at it with the red marker cap)...but i removed it and there is nothing just a threaded hole... what is this thing for? Is it somehow hoko to the choke? The lever has a flat pad on it but on my carb it did not move anything...

That lever is for the accelerator pump. You will notice that it pushes on a rod running down into the #3 carb.

I know it's a long way to ship stuff to the UK, but if you want to ship the carbs and your new parts to me I can rebuild them and set them up properly for you. I've just returned a set to the south of Spain, which is not much different in distance. And I'm currently working on a set from Norway.

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

Thank you very much. That is good to know. When I examined it closer i was selfexplanatory....I just received a "partial" rebuilt kit from Randakk.... so carbs are hopefuly done and ready to go back on bike. I let you know if she is good.

Thanks
