1980 GL1100 front brake master cylinder reservior cup screw.

Postby Steamboat7404 » Thu Apr 28, 2016 11:07 am

I went to add more brake fluid to the front brake reservoir cup and noticed sometime in the bikes life the reservoir cup cover has had a screw broken off. The remains of the broken cover screw is still locked in the threaded portion of the cup. Question: should I try to remove the broken screw or just leave it alone and not fill the cup to high point of the oil fill line. When the oil is at the high fill line, brake fluid weeps out. Thanks for any suggestions.

If the diaphragm and plate are still present one missing screw is sufficient to cause leaks. The 4 screws just hold the cap down.

Is it missing ?

Part 45520-422-026 diaphragm
Part 45521-422-006 plate

No three out of the four screws still work, one screw is busted off in the threads.

personally, i would try to get that broken screw out. if your fluid is "weeping out", your probably "weeping" air in. even with one broken out of 4, chances are your getting air into the brake system. every time you release that front brake lever you might be pulling air into your brake system thru the cap and the rubber diaphram. you can try using a left handed drill bit, an ez out, or,(last resort), replace the reservoir. get that screw out and chase the threads or replace the reservoir and bleed the front brake to make sure you have all the air out. your life may depend on your brakes working perfectly some day. GOD forbid you need to make a "panic" stop and your brakes don't stop you in time. i might take some "short cuts" on some things, but my brakes aren't one of them. that should have been fixed a LONG time ago, but thats just my personal opinion.

Had Friday off so attempted to remove the remains of the screw this morning.. Nothing doing stuck tight I'm wondering if the last owner jammed a different screw into the master cylinder and that's why it busted off. Tried everything at my disposal and it didn't budge it. Looks like ill have to cut the reservoir cup off around the remains of the broken screw. Once I expose the broken piece I should be able to grab it with vise grips and turn it out. Again not to sure the broken screw is the correct one for the treads so it might mean a bunch of new parts.

RB, that was my thought also, but if the screw is broken off that deep into it, may be better replacing the reservoir. it might be cheaper, (and easier) in the long run just to replace it.

Been looking up reservoir cup prices. Cheapest I have found is $55.00 didn't think that plastic part would be that much.

atta boy. you'll be better off replacing it and not have to worry about it anymore, besides, a new front brake reservoir looks better on the handlebars too ;). i hope when it was weeping out that none of the brake fluid got onto your bike's chrome or paint.

Oh ya, the black painted area around the reservoir cup is screwed up. I was wondering why the original owner left the brake fluid level on the lowest possible amount needed. I found out when you put the correct amount of brake fluid in the cup and the bike is parked with the front wheel to the left, the reservoir weeps.

your lucky the brake fluid didn't take the paint off of your tank shelter. you get as much as one drip on the paint, its "game over" and your looking at touching up or at most and repaint.

New reservoir cup and O ring showed last night. Drilled and re-tapped the broken screw out and put on the new parts. It all went well. No leaks and no issues so far. Thanks to all who replied.
