Lower shock mount, GL1100 rear drive unit

Postby Cattmando » Sun May 01, 2016 5:57 pm

Pulled the after market shocks off my recently acquired 1100 standard today, after riding to Aurora, IL and back on Thursday and Saturday. Found the lower shock mount peg to be loose, threads are all gone from the rear drive unit. Looking for some help on the best way to get this fixed. Tips 'n hints appreciated. Just happy the rear end didn't collapse on me after a +500 mile ride. Anyone else ever heard of this problem? I was surprised to see the steel post for the lower shock eye is a screw in unit only supported on one side of the shock, and the threads into which it screws in the aluminum housing are very fine.

My bad for not doing a closer inspection when I bought this bike a week ago. Just too eager I guess. A few other things wrong, like the loose main fuse I mentioned in an earlier post.

More questions coming.

you have two options, put in a helicoil to repair the damaged thread or replace the final drive. you can always find one on ebay or your nearest bike wreckers. 8-)
Ride safe, Todd

Agree with your advice, Todd. I'll be checking for a good machine shop here in Vincennes today. Doubt I can find a helicoil with these fine metric threads but will check at our local NAPA shop. Rear drive units are abundant, assuming all the same for all years of the 1100 and maybe the 1200 too(?).

Got my rear drive back from Vincennes Welding today. They made a new lower shock mount pin and installed it with new threads in the final drive. Pricey but done right, $150. I'll post a pic tomorrow in my main thread.
