'83 Interstate headlights not working

Postby drinklocalbrew » Wed May 04, 2016 2:38 pm

Good afternoon,

I've looked over the other threads on this forum and cannot find a thread with the same problem. It goes something like this:

-Low beam went out
-Switched to high beam and my dash gauges stopped working (clock, voltage, etc.) and then the high beam stopped working
-Now when the high beam is on, the gauges don't work and the running lights get brighter
-When I got home I check the bulb, one of the filaments had burned out

This is what I've done:

-Checked all fuses and all are good
-Replaced the headlight bulb
-Disassembled and cleaned the starter button
-Disassembled and cleaned the hi/low switch
-Checked for power at headlight plug and DO NOT have power there

Is there a relay, perhaps? And if so, where is it?

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the help. Also, please support your local breweries!

Aaron

I'll bet 3 cents you have a bad ground.Especially if the headlight wires pass through a connector plug on the left side of the faring.
Your "no volts" may be in error unless your test meter was attached to the ground post of the battery.
Revisit the headlight wires with your meter negative lead connected to the battery negative terminal. You should not find any volts on the green wire.
There is no relay.Power goes to the start button, crosses over to the hi/low switch and is passed to the headlamp.

Virgilmobile,

Thanks for the response! I got it figured out; there were two problems. The first was the main plug going to the fairing, it wasn't fully connected. That helped to figure out the real problem, which was indeed the hi/low switch. I replaced the bulb, as it has blown one of the filaments (probably a short along the way) and the took apart the h/l switch again. I cleaned it and saw that it was worn out. I was able to get it all put back together and it is working like a champ once again!

Thanks!
