82 Aspencade rear caliper pistons needed

Postby sidecar pinkerton » Fri May 06, 2016 2:21 pm

Hey Wingers, I thought I could salvage what appeared to be a nice looking '82 Aspencade with sidecar that sat for ? yrs. Things were progressing although slowly, until I got to the rear brake. Master is frozen solid. Worse the rear caliper pistons mostly exposed due to worn pads are corroded beyond service. These are 30mm x 39mm the only model with 39mm length is the '82 Aspencade that I know of. Does anyone have a couple to spare? Or a viable suggestion? Just looking to get on the road safely this summer.
First time on forum, thanks to all the how to articles.

That piston (part # 43107-MB9-871) is listed on the wingovations.com Here is a link to that page:

http://www.wingovations.com/additional- ... 4579471078

That website is for John Evans' company, located in Scotland. John is on this forum as Old Fogey.

If you can't find pistons elsewhere, you can likely get them at wingovations.

THANKS, after the sticker shock, two pistons + shipping $91 < I'll hope to first find a pair just sitting around and waiting to be returned to life on the road. However, if need be I'll crawl out from under this barrel and chance that the clutch and tranny are worth a investment in SS brake pistons. Please understand I didn't retire with a "gold(wing) nest egg". This is an unproven barn find. thanks, looking for a cheaper way out from under the barrel.

Yep, I'm retired also, so I know what you mean. Maybe the way to go is to look for a complete caliper on ebay in good enough condition to use or rebuild. Good luck.

thanks, I got a lead on a used caliper on craigslist maybe something will turn up there. Sure would hate to sell this for parts, less than 21,000 on the odometer, but its occupied a two car garage for one and half years. Guess I'll give it a couple of weeks yet.
If anyone has a solid lead on a 82 Aspencade rear caliper or pistons (for the budget minded) contact me here. Thanks

I bought two caliper pistons late last year from Amazon. No where near that much money.

I used to have a 1967 Saab, 3 cylinder,3 carbureted, 2 stroke. My point being, I needed pistons for the front calipers. They were $80 each. But by doing some research $20 each. You need the length, and diameter. And any other oddball things/ usually non. There are hundreds of pistons out there. It doesnt have to have Honda on it. Where do U think they get these pistons? There not new old stock.

97 Aspy, I really do appreciate your help and info. as I do everyone who sincerely provides input. So I will attempt to add a picture of the elusive part that is so desperately needed. 30mm dia. x 39mm length '82 Aspencade 1HFSC0222CA215172 10mm rotor. Sidecar Pinkerton

I see the ones I steered you towards were only 35mm sorry about that. I do feel you pain though had an 83 Aspencade and needed an ignition switch for it. Ended up being unobtanium.
Here is another link for 1982 A OEM parts maybe I got it right this time.

Hmmm, Unobtanium no, wingovations.com (91$) but its not easy to pry a penny out of an Irishmen's pocket. I will contact hondapartshouse during business hours. I've noticed some suppliers use the letter A one space after the standard model designation GL1100 A , while the Aspencade they list as GL1100A A , and the Interstate as GL1100I A . I know a front caliper piston is identical in dia. and slides right in to the rear caliper. It may even work for a while with new pads and uncut rotor. But maybe Honda realized how easy this could happen so the very next model year changed things. Leaving '82 Aspencade with a 'one of' rear caliper. Maybe some other reason.
Please check your shelves for good useable 30mm x 39mm pistons, I only need two. Thanks

After checking with hondapartshouse.com the piston is 'not available' or Unobtanium through mother Honda, the parts guy at the local shop says 'oh here's a dealer in Florida with some in stock, give him a call'. We'll run down this lead too. His on hold ad. says 'in business since 1948", hmmm maybe. To busy with customers, he'll call back when free. :( SS pistons at $91 are looking better all the time. Skier may have the winning tip, unless the dealer has them priced at 1982 cost.

Oh wow... I have the same thing going on... I need to rebuild a rear caliper on an '82 Aspincade... I"m not sure if it will need new pistons, yet. That rear rotor is fun to find too.

I wonder if you changed out the rotor and caliper, if you could run with interstate parts? I have heard someone say at one point it was a popular swap but I don't know if it would work without heavy modifications.

hey Urbanmadness, I have a '81 interstate for a "donor bike". But have not yet considered a swap. The caliper is single piston, the rotor is thinner and may have a larger dia.(different wheel size and mounting bracket also ),as for an 82 Interstate swap I don't know. HAS ANY ONE ELSE DONE A SWAP LIKE THIS? I am open to a swap if need be, the '82 Asp. rotor is 10mm and vented for cooling. Because the bike is equipped with a California sidecar w/o brakes I want to keep as much braking power and cooling as possible. PLEASE NOTE THE NEW AVATAR OF THE '82 ASPENCADE AS IT SITS NOW. Please help

:D WOW Who would have thought? The Florida Honda Dealer, Haps 941-365-3443, parts ask for Dave, has new old stock (NOS) with shipping to Wi. $76 for '82 Aspencade rear brake pistons. I maybe should have asked him to confirm the length. Fingers crossed.
Urbanmadness, your rear caliper is between the wheel and left saddle bag, remove bag to access the caliper. Do a search on gl1100 rear caliper rebuild and stuck pistons in how to articles as you may already contributed to or seen.

I know where it is.... not what I asked.... I'm more interested in interchanging parts. On my bike, the rotor is in marginal shape and that rotor is very rare. I'm interested in finding out If I can swap to an interstate or standard rotor and caliper. If I can, I will swap before rebuilding the caliper I have now.

A miscommunication on my part, no I've never tried a swap. I'm still in restore mode and not into modification mode yet. Best of luck. Let us know how it works out.
