New GL1100 '82? 83? Aspencade trike - loud back firing from starting

Postby steelhorseangel » Wed May 11, 2016 4:00 pm

Hi Guys

Greetings from the UK!

My relative Angel has bought me a GL1100 Wing Aspy trike, as an awesome present,
due to spinal injury. I can ride again and it won't cripple me.
I don't need to put my foot down! :-)

The trike was built in Canada and shipped across the pond, laughing!
The title advises '84 and I know that they stopped production in '83.
The trike was transported with the plug leads off and there are no plug
identifiers for 1,2,3,4 cylinders etc?

The PO did his last ride 155 miles on it, no back fire problems.

q) I don't know the correct plug position for each connection. I can't the answers anywhere?
Does a specific coil ht lead, go to a specific cylinder?

The spark plugs were removed and cleaned (the color of each plug, was perfect) and recapped to 0.25, any wider gap and it back fired more often.

The loud back firing is upsetting the neighbours and local dogs bark.
My cat Jak meows and then freaks out, a back firing vehicle is scary!

Can anyone advise please?

Many thanks fellow Wingers!

Best

Norman

Download the service manual from this site, should help a bit.
Sounds like an interesting ride- we like pictures :). The wires do need to go to a specific spark plug. Cylinder # wise- As your are sitting on the bike, the front right is #1, front left #2, Rear right is #3, and # 4 is rear left. As I have a 1980, I am not sure as to were the coil wires should follow on an 83. If the wires are hooked up correctly, my second guess would be timing or carb sync.
Let us know how it goes. Regards, Johnny

Hi Johnny

Thanks for your reply!

A friend has given us a GL1100 manual.
We've found the cylinder numbers,
as you kindly advised.

What we don't know is:-

q) Each coil has 2 ht leads, which wire
goes where? I can't find this info
buddy?

Thanks again for your advice!

Cheers

Norman

O.K.
On my 1980, as your sitting on the bike, The left connection on the left coil goes to # 4. The right connection goes to #3. On the right coil the right connection goes to #1 . The left goes to # 2. Regards, Johnny
