Not starting

Postby ohiowildman » Fri May 20, 2016 9:35 pm

Help ! Pulled motor to replace starter. I also changed stator, clutch, starter clutch, had valves replaced, changed the timing belts. Now my problem. Engine cranks but sounds like it is out of time. Popping & occasional backfire, but will not start.Pickup coils are in spec. Triple checked belts & valve adj. Ran before starter went out. Any ideas or help will be appreciated

Check that the spark plug wires are on the correct plugs or that the coils are connected correctly.

Plug wires are on correct plugs. Never touched carbs. Is there a possibility that the pulse generator can be installed out of time (180degrees) off ?

Not really, however its possible to loose the "key" that keeps the ignition mechanism locked to the shaft.
it looks like a roll pin, inserted into the shaft and the back side of the timing mechanism plate is keyed to match. The pin can fall out if disassembled...never to be seen again.Well maybe when the floor is cleaned with a magnet.
This will lead to ignition timing to be random.

Does this sound like it happened before.??

Just got done checking spark units, ok. Pulled plugs, good spark on all. Plugs were damp. Will not fire even with starter fluid. May have to pull motor/swing arm whichever is easier to recheck pulse generator. I'm getting down. Feeling lost.
