1982 GL1100I Engine issue locked up
Bought a Goldwing this year to rebuild. Was told bike would start and purr like a kitten, but owner didn't have a key that would work in bike so I bought with out hearing it run. Took bike home and removed locks from saddlebag and took to lock smith to have keys made for wing. Hooked up battery and had nothing happen when key was turned. Crossed wire on starter relay and heard clunk. Removed plugs and found that cylinder was rusty. removed air cleaned cover and could see where it had water in it. Filled cylinders with MMO and let them set for days and tried to turn engine over with crank bolt and no luck. Removed right cylinder head and found that rear piston was at bottom of stroke and that the cylinder was full of rust. Took head apart and valves and seats were rusted out. Was wondering if anyone has done a complete rebuild on an engine that is this bad, or if it is possible? Have had a hard time find a used engine under 800 so if I need to spend that on a used engine could this one be rebuilt for that or less?
Bike also needs to be completely sanded and all fairings and bags repainted, forks resealed and complete brake overhaul.
Will be looking at this site a lot for info on working on this wing. I have always wanted a Goldwing and didn't pay much for this one so have room to spend some money on it. but also don't want to waste money if I cant repair or replace this engine economically. Any info any one has will be greatly appreciated

That looks pretty crook to me.
I would be looking for a running engine that woud suit your purpose.

unless you want to spend a LOT of money rebuilding the engine thats on your bike, your best bet is to look for a used motor with maybe less miles than whats on your current engine. you might get lucky and find one thats in good shape with low miles. there are plenty of motor parts on eBay, and you might be able to pick up most of the main engine parts, IE: cylinder blocks, pistons, rings, heads and other components and put one together using some of your original internal parts.

That's what I am looking to do repair or replace. Used engines II have found are around 900 for a good used one. I am trying to decide if that is the best way to go or if I have to spend that much on a used one could I rebuild this one and then I will know that I have a good engine. Was just wonderinging if anyone else has ran into this issue and had any luck with it.

I've already bought whole bikes for 800.00.If not running just make sure the engine isn't seized. Then you'll have a spare parts bike

Good morning lotsakids, I can't speak from experience on saving that engine, but from personal experience in restoration of a almost in grave 1982 interstate, parts are expensive and hard to find. On a bike that has spent most of its life sitting, many parts need replacement especially anything made out of rubber, ( o rings and gaskets) you will be spending several thousands in parts and fluids. Not to mention a running engine and apparently a paint job. I wish you good luck in your new project. Before and after pictures would be great. We love pictures.

what does the rest of the bike look like....... cause that engine sure aint pretty.
also you state that you could / would pay about 900 for a new engine. buying an engine out of a bike you are still taking the sellers word for its condition. what is the condition of your carbs ??? tires ??? brakes ??? seat ??? paint ??? tires etc.............
there are three Bikes in your area on craigs list that claim to be turn key and are under $2k. maybe you could even get them for less. just saying that you should look at all your options.

I think you might be ahead to salvage the parts that are good and sell them and use that money to buy something that works. Some old bikes are not worth the cost and time to save unless you have both and just want to do the restoration.
