GL1100 finicky about oil level.

Post by chrisz » Thu Jun 02, 2016 7:52 pm

Hi all,

I've just replaced the oil in my oldwing and put a couple of cup fulls too much (covered the oil sight window completely). Started the bike with some difficulty, which was odd as the bike normally just fires up within a second of pushing the start button when warm. Ran poorly and needed some throttle to keep running. Shut off the engine and let it sit for a minute or so and the oil was at the correct full line. Let it sit another 5 minutes and the oil level was again covering the sight window. Drained about 2-3 cup fulls and the oil showed at the correct level in sight window. Started the bike and it ran with no issues. First for me, that an engine would be finicky about the oil level being too high by a couple of cup-fulls. BTW, when I say couple of cup fulls, that is what it seemed to drain into the pan, I didn't actually measure the drained oil as it went into the old oil pan.

Well the first question is: How much oil did you put in at the change? If it is overfilled either you didn't drain the oil properly or you put in too much. The proper amount of oil with filter change is 3.4 qts.
