Detailed tune up help

Postby Davis82 » Sat Jun 18, 2016 10:57 am

Im trying to get my 82 gl1100 running as smoothly as possible. For starters as I'm coming to a stop or decelerating my engine stalls. Carbs were synced yesterday. And valves were adjusted the day before. Vacuum problem? It revs up fairly well but hesitates to return to idle. What can cause this? it didn't stall a month ago. Adjusted everything thought it may help.RPMS also fluctuate a lot when choke is pulled out.

With a small mirror and flashlight , watch each slide operate as you run the engine to 3500 rpm and then close the throttle. Each slide must rise and fall smooth and the same.Just one sticking is a problem.

Try hooking the gauges for the carb sync up again. With the bike warmed up, run the RPMS up to 3000 and hold. See if your readings fluctuate a bit. This can help tell of vacuum problems, valves, gaskets etc.

How do I watch the slides? Remove the intake manifolds on each? It does fluctuate when held at 3000.

Remove the air filter. Look inside the plenum at each intake with the mirror. You will see the slides move up and down.

I will try. the plenum has those metal net things rusty inside. Cant really see anything past them with a mirror. Seems the screws rusted them to the plenum. Will try some pb blaster and elbow grease. I do not want to remove the carbs at all. I removed the intake manifolds and turned the throttle and the butterflies closed pretty fast not as solid of a thunk as I would expect but they still snapped shut. What purpose do the metal nets serve? If removed can they be left out? Appreciate the help keep it coming.
